Demand your council candidate backs ACORN Sheffield's demands

Tenants, workers, residents. Nurses, cleaners, retail staff, key workers: we’ve proved over the last year that it’s people like us who keep this country running and we’re entitled to our fair share of what it produces.

We’re tired of rip-off public transport. We’re sick of rent and bills always going up and jobs that never pay enough. We’re done with being harassed at work, home and in the streets.

ACORN is building a union of ordinary people to defend ourselves during this crisis and beyond.

In the upcoming Local Elections, we are demanding Sheffield City Council candidates pledge to back our five demands if elected:

Ban Bad Landlords
Back Public Control of our Buses
Defend the right to protest and oppose the Policing Bill
Educate to end sexual and domestic violence
House All Rough Sleepers In Sheffield

Dear Councillor Candidate,

I am writing to you ahead of the local elections in May as one of your constituents and a member of ACORN, the community union.

ACORN’s Sheffield branch has voted on a series of pledges we believe would improve the lives of those in our communities. We put these demands to you in the hope that you share our vision for the city, will pledge to support them as part of your upcoming campaign, and work to implement them in your subsequent term of office if you are elected.

Our demands are:

Ban Bad Landlords:
The problem of rogue landlords in Sheffield has reached a crisis point. ACORN successfully pushed the council to adopt selective landlord licensing, but we need licensing across the city to drive rogue landlords out for good.

Back Public Control of our Buses:
Pressure Mayor Dan Jarvis to take South Yorkshire’s buses out of the hands of private companies and into a public franchising system, like Manchester’s, with a cheaper, more reliable service.

Defend the right to protest and oppose the Policing Bill:
The government is trying to curb our right to protest because they know it works. No protest, no progress! Stand with communities and support the growing movement against the PCSC bill.

Educate to end sexual and domestic violence:
Laws aren’t enough: we need to eradicate the attitudes and culture which enable violence against women and people at risk. The council should divert funding from Police and Crime Commissioner budgets to invest in education, training and mental health services.

House All Rough Sleepers In Sheffield: 
Commit to providing long-term, secure, well-supported housing for all people regardless of circumstance or immigration status.

As a national union, ACORN is organising for power to secure a better deal for our communities and winning. We won the fight to abolish unfair letting fees, saved social housing tenants thousands of pounds a year on energy, and stopped national banks discriminating against tenants on benefits. Our Sheffield branch has grown to almost 500 members and is getting stronger everyday. In the last year we’ve won thousands of pounds for tenants who have been mistreated by their landlords, supported vulnerable members of the community through the pandemic, and brought together residents in Park Hill flats to stop heating bill increases.

These demands are strongly and widely felt among our members and if you were to support them we could feel confident in the direction of travel for our city. These 5 demands reflect the real issues faced by our members and many others across Sheffield today. They are clearly focused, ambitious yet achievable, and would bring about massive positive changes in the city.

As one of your possible constituents, I urge you to support these pledges, to show you are committed to improving the lives of residents in the city. Whether or not you get my vote in May will depend on whether you pledge to support each one.
