The rise in short term holiday lettings such as AirBnB or buildings left dormant most of the year as second homes is having a devastating effect on the communities of Cornwall. For years we've seen short term holiday lets replace long term rental accommodation, meaning rents are going up and conditions are going down. The lack of long term residents has led to increased homelessness, businesses closing down, schools struggling to get funding and NHS staffing crises.
Cornwall Council are yet to address this issue until very recently, promising a 100% premium council tax increase on second homes to be in place by 2025. We're a union of lower & middle income people & we say that this isn't going far enough!
