ACORN Bristol members recognise the urgent seriousness of addressing climate change and air pollution and we recognise that our members have diverse views about low traffic neighbourhoods in general.

However, one of ACORN’s key principles is that residents should make the decisions about what life in our local areas is like. And we have seen that this principle is being violated in Bristol City Council’s implementation of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood - known as the EBLN.

In a council consultation, a majority of local people objected to the proposed works, and the council still went ahead. At protests that stopped the works for over 100 days, at least once council representatives asked police to forcibly remove protesters, who included ACORN members, which the police refused to do.

Council leaders have repeatedly refused to respond to invitations and pleas to meet local people from Lawrence Hill Neighbourhood Forum who are deeply concerned about the implementation of the EBLN.

And most recently, dozens of police descended on Barton Hill for what local ACORN members who were at the scene have described as a ‘traumatising night raid’.

Any trust between local people and the authorities was badly damaged in this moment.

We are demanding answers about the night raid, and for council leaders to meet with community leaders.

The local people must have their say.

We demand the following:
1. For the council to publish which decision-makers in the council and local police made the night raid happen, and their reasons for doing so.

2. We demand that Tony Dyer, Heather Mack, and Ed Plowden meet urgently with community leaders living within the EBLN area representing viewpoints for and against the scheme, including representatives of Lawrence Hill Neighbourhood Forum, to negotiate on the future of already imposed changes and any changes that are yet to be imposed.

3. We are demanding for this scheme to have majority support in a public consultation of residents living within the scheme, as a precondition for it being made permanent.

4. And finally we demand an investigation into inconsistencies in the council’s statements about which groups were consulted on the scheme, with results made public.
