As one of the largest democratic organisations in Bristol, ACORN members from across the city came together to write and vote for the union's demands for the local elections in May. From a shortlist of 15 we voted for the following 6 demands:

End Rough Sleeping in Bristol by 2024
Build 1,000 Council Homes a Year by 2025
Lobby Central Government for Rent Controls
Retrofit Bristol's Homes
Universal Free School Meals
Funding Good Food For All

These demands reflect the urgent need to address the housing crisis in our city, which has resulted in homelessness, unaffordable rents, and a waiting list for council housing that gets longer by the day. We are also demanding that the Council address fuel poverty and the climate emergency with an ambitious retrofitting target. Lastly, the pandemic has brought into sharp focus the need for better food provision in the city, and this is reflected in our final two demands.

I am writing to you as one of ACORN Bristol’s 1,200+ members, and a resident of the constituency you hope to be elected to. We are the largest community union in the city, a mass membership organisation made up of ordinary working people of all backgrounds, who have come together to build better lives for ourselves and our communities. We organise through collective action and take on issues that directly affect our members' lives.

As a union that represents the interests of low to moderate income people, we are well aware that the local and mayoral elections will have a huge impact on the lives of our members and those in similar economic circumstances. Just as you have been drawing up plans for what the city will look like should you take office, ACORN members have been doing the same, deciding what issues matter most to us and what changes we want to see in our city. We are conveying these demands to all Council candidates and need firm commitments from all candidates that they will use their power once in office to advocate for them.

Our members in Bristol voted for six key demands. They are are as follows:

These 6 demands reflect the real issues faced by our members and many others across Bristol today. They are clearly focused, ambitious yet achievable, and would bring about massive positive changes in the city. As one of your possible constituents, I urge you to support them, to show you are committed to improving the lives of residents in the city. Whether or not you get my vote in May will depend on whether you pledge to support each one.
