Southern Housing are in the process of selling off atleast 20 social rent homes in Brighton.

Many tenants have been left in limbo as to what is happening to them with limited contact form Southern Housing, one has been moved into a new property without a working boiler.

This will uproot their lives in a time when there is desperate need for social housing in Brighton.

Let them and their CEO Paul Hackett know Brighton backs their tenants and demands accountability from them!

Dear Mr Hackett CBE and Southern Housing Team
We are writing to you as our members are facing the sale of their properties as well as
increased service charges and uncertainty on the future of their housing, with little to no
answer from Southern Housing on this.
As I’m sure you are aware social housing in Brighton is desperately needed due to
extortionate private rents and a lack of accessibility in the private stock. We also face a very
high demand for council housing which is only increasing due to the demolition of several
blocks predominantly of council tenants. Therefore this decision to privately sell so much
stock in the city is understandably having an impact on the mental health and quality of life of
your tenants and has led many to question the motivation of this.
Through their union they are demanding:
- One of your executive team comes to answer their tenants on the decision to sell as
well as, the increase in service charge in the build up to this, whether or not the
impact on the tenants was taken into account before this decision was made and
whether places in other social housing providers are being looked into for these
tenants.
- We also ask you to appoint a regular point of contact for progress on the sales and
rehousing of the affected tenants. With monthly updates on this process. As many
tenants currently feel left in the dark on this process which is obviously causing
uncertainty and impacting their wellbeing.
- Service charge increases on properties being sold be cancelled. As any extra
maintenance work at this point will not be benefitting the tenants. So it would not be
appropriate for them to cover this cost.
ACORN members agree that safe, secure and affordable homes make all the difference in
people's lives and that any housing uncertainty must be avoided. So we look forward to you
addressing these concerns and giving your tenants the attention and support that they need
through this. We expect to hear from you in the next 3 working days to begin the process of
addressing these issues for your tenants.
