Housing conditions in England are appalling and rank amongst the worst in Europe. Illegal activity from landlords is rife with almost half of renters victims of illegal acts by their landlord or lettings agent.  Our own research showed 92% of renters have suffered serious hazards.

Despite the severity of this crisis, our local authorities and police are often failing to take action against landlords who rent our dangerous and unsafe properties or break the law. 

Only 20% of our members who had experienced a hazard reported it to their local authority, and of those, only 22% said that they received any help from their local authority

And when local authorities do intervene, tenants are often evicted in retaliation.

Councils do have powers to take action against bad landlords - but they don’t use them!

This is why ACORN London are calling for a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to bad landlords and landlords who break the law, which includes our councils and policy using all available powers to tackle bad landlords.
