Lambeth Council: Rehouse Dayo!

Our member Dayo is facing homelessness

She was deemed 'intentionally homeless' by Lambeth Council in 2025 after turning down accommodation that wasn't accessible due to her and her daughter's health issues.

Instead of finding Dayo and her daughter suitable housing Lambeth Council closed Dayo’s case and ended its responsibility to house them.

She is now facing eviction from her temporary accommodation.

Dear Cllr Elliot,

I am writing to you on behalf of Dayo Akinyemi who is a member of ACORN Lambeth.

After initially turning down an offer on inaccessible and thereby unsuitable permanent accommodation in 2025, Lambeth Council closed Dayo’s case and ended its responsibility to house Dayo.

Dayo provided medical letters from her GP outlining her health issues and why the housing was not suitable.

After being discharged from Lambeth Council’s waiting list to be housed, Dayo explained that she was not made aware that declining the property offer would deem her ‘intentionally homeless’.

This has had profound impacts on the mental and physical health of the family, on the children’s schooling, and on Dayo’s capacity as a single parent to provide adequate care and support to her children

We are requesting urgent intervention from Lambeth Council. Lambeth Council has a duty to rehouse Dayo and her two daughters and right this wrong. We therefore demand:

•⁠  ⁠Lambeth Council commits to supporting Dayo and her family with her homelessness case.

•⁠  ⁠Dayo and her two daughters are provided with suitable, safe, and secure housing which considers their medical, welfare and family circumstances when assessing the suitability of any accommodation offered to them.

•⁠  ⁠An explanation of why adequate assistance was not provided despite Dayo’s repeated requests for help, and to correct any failures identified.

•⁠  ⁠A permanent and sustainable resolution so Dayo and her children are no longer facing homelessness and housing insecurity.
