Waltham Forest Council are trying to force our member Michelle, who is homeless with her 10 year old son, outside the city as far as Stoke or Newcastle.
Michelle was evicted recently from her home via a no fault eviction. The council refused to help at first until ACORN intervened to get her emergency accommodation in a hotel. However, Waltham Forest council are now saying they will end all support unless Michelle agrees to move outside of the city into private accommodation which could be as far as Stoke or Newcastle. This would mean Michelle taking her 10 year old out of school, and moving away from the area she has lived all her life away from her support network. It is social cleansing and it is cruel!
This is a practice which could soon be made illegal after it's been uncovered councils have been forcing homeless families out of the city.
Disappointingly. Waltham Forest Council is run by the Green Party who promised to not send homeless families outside of the borough.
We're demanding Waltham Forest council:
- Provide emergency accommodation to Michelle and her son
- Support her in finding long term housing in Waltham Forest or as close as possible
- Commit to stop forcing homeless families outside of the borough.
