I am writing to you as a member and/or supporter of the Haringey  branch of ACORN, the community union that fights for the rights of tenants in both the council and private rented sector. We are concerned about dodgy landlords, high rents, unfair evictions and the use of bailiffs. As you are no doubt aware housing is a massive issue in our borough.

Local elections are an exciting time of potential change and we are seeking pledges from
candidates standing in Haringey on the following issues:

Support Rent Controls

Rents in London are some of the highest in the world, with many of our members paying
most of their income on rent and working class people being priced out of the city. Powers to
regulate rents are key to addressing the housing affordability crisis.

We want you to use your influence as an elected Councillor to push for rent control
powers, including signing our open letter to the Secretary of State, Steve Reed.

Bailiff Free London

Bailiff use by councils has risen sharply in recent years. Bailiff visits are not only traumatic
for low income households struggling to pay their council tax, but there is no evidence that
these harsh collection practices are leading to higher revenues for councils to provide local
services.

We want you to use your influence as an elected Councillor to support ACORN’s Bailiff Free
Britain campaign and end the use of bailiffs in Haringey.

Zero Tolerance For Bad Landlords

Across the country landlords are consistently let off the hook for poor properties and criminal
behaviour, with two thirds of councils failing to prosecute a single landlord. Our own data
shows that councils across London are failing to use their enforcement powers against bad
landlords putting tenants at risk. We fought hard for councils to be given further enforcement
powers in the new Renters Rights Act, but these powers are meaningless if councils don’t
use them.

We want you to pledge your support to ACORN’s Zero Tolerance to Bad Landlords
campaign and use your influence as an elected Councillor to improve Private Rented Sector
enforcement in your council.

Save Down Lane Community Centre

Haringey Council plans to demolish this much-loved community centre and replace it with a
more expensive but much smaller centre with inadequate facilities.

We want you to pledge your support for the community’s proposal to renovate the existing
centre.

Can you confirm that you support ACORN Haringey’s pledges and that if elected you will fight
with us to make Haringey a better, fairer borough for renters and their families?
