Cllr Adilypour - don't evict people for not paying your rip off service charges

 

Rachel is a single parent with a child in primary school. She works part time and has lived on the Roupell Park estate since 2017.
In April 2023, Rachel and her fellow residents on the estate were told at short notice that service charges were due to rise by 300%, from £26 to £76 per week. Your Council said the price inflation was due to rising heat and hot water costs in the communal heat network system.
Despite being unemployed at the time, Rachel had no support or assistance to save her from falling into debt. The heat/hot water portion of the service charge was mostly ineligible for benefits assistance. There was no accompanying increase in financial aid for those on a low income, such as Rachel, as there would be for a typical rent rise.
Despite keeping up with her principal rent, Rachel has had to go into debt to try and make up service charge arrears. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, raising a young son, she cannot manage. She has received multiple letters threatening her with eviction, including in the days before Christmas. Your Council has classified service charge debt as rent arrears, enabling them to threaten vulnerable households, such as Rachel’s, with eviction.
She has now been given notice that a possession hearing will take place later this month.

The personal information collected by Do Gooder is held subject to a Data Processing Agreement between Do Gooder and The Campaigner in compliance with the EU's GDPR and Australian law.
