Stop letting Hackney Landlords rent without a license!

On Wednesday 26th Feb the council is voting on an ammendment for Landlord Licensing in it's budget meeting - ask your local councillor to vote YES!

We want Hackney's landlords to be licensed! Use the tool below to email your local councillors asking them to support Licensing in Hackney.

In Hackney, most landlords don’t need a licence, where as in most other London boroughs you do. Landlords only need a licence if they are letting out a House in Multiple Occupation (an HMO), which has 5 or more people in it. This means many Landlords are getting away with treating tenants very badly!

ACORN think that landlord licensing is great because:

o   Licensing schemes more than pay for themselves, because councils typically hire enforcement officers using the money that landlords pay for licences. It can even bring in extra cash for the council coffers!

o   As a condition of giving landlords a licence, Hackney Council can inspect the properties they let out. This is great for tenants, because it improves property standards and management and protects residents from rogue landlords, but also great for the council as they get a good idea of the condition of properties and can identify residents who may require extra support.

o   Lots of other London boroughs have or are trying to have licensing schemes – and most are more extensive than Hackney. We think that Hackney should use schemes like this to try and become the best place to rent in London! As of December Secretary of state approval is no longer needed to expand Licensing schemes. Let's lead by example!

We think that landlord licensing is a minimum requirement to improve property standards and management and protect residents, and that the council must not consider alternatives ‘instead of’ a licensing scheme. Remember - most boroughs in London already do some version of this!
