The rise in short term holiday lettings such as AirBnB is having a devastating effect on our communities. ACORN members have seen short term holiday lets replace long term rental accommodation, meaning rents are going up and conditions are going down.

In some areas the rise in short term lets is breaking up communities and destroying their cultural heritage, Welsh language speaking villages have been particularly affected. In other areas, the lack of long term residents has led to businesses closing down, schools struggling to get funding, and NHS staff shortages.

Members have reported feelings of isolation with neighbours being forced to move away, with the ‘heart’ being ripped out of communities.

That’s why we want MPs to sign this early day motion tabled by Rachael Maskell MP which calls for licensing and restrictions on Short Term Lets, to stop them fuelling the housing crisis and threatening public services, community spaces and cultural heritage by forcing people to move out of their hometowns.

I am writing to you to bring to your attention the negative impact that the rise in short term holiday lets is having, and steps that you can take this week to help change this.

Some communities are seeing a huge rise in the number of holiday lets, with the number of full holiday homes to rent in Coastal areas of England & Wales increasing by 56% in 3 years, with up to 50% of homes being holiday lets in some tourist hotspots.

This is having a devastating effect on some of these communities, with long term accommodation being replaced by short term lets, meaning rents are going up and conditions are going down. This is greatly exacerbating the already acute housing crisis, leaving too few homes for local people.

In some areas the rise in short term lets is breaking up communities and destroying their cultural heritage. In other areas, the lack of long term residents has led to schools struggling to get funding, NHS staffing crises and pubs and businesses closing down, ripping the heart out of once thriving communities.

For these reasons, I implore you to give your support to the ‘Short Term Holiday Let Licensing Scheme’ Early Day Motion tabled by Rachael Maskell MP, and to back the Short-Term Licensing Bill which will be debated in Parliament on Friday 9th December.

I believe this is really important to stop short term lets fuelling the housing crisis, and to protect the cultural heritage, community spaces and local services around the country.
