Email your MP about unaffordable housing!

MPs are currently deciding what to include in the Renters Rights Bill, the biggest overhaul of protections for private tenants in decades. While many proposals show promise, the Bill doesn’t go far enough on affordability! We need to stop runaway rents eating up renters incomes and forcing people to move out of their communities because the rents are too high! We are calling for MPs to sign on to amendment NC7 by Carla Denyer (for rent control) and amendments 5, 6 and 9 by Paula Barker (for capping in tenancy rent rises). Use this tool to message your MP and urge them to support tougher measures. When writing, consider the following:

Include your name and postcode. If you’re a local constituent you stand a bigger chance of being heard.

The Renters Rights Bill provides an important opportunity for a fairer housing system.

In its current form, it provides many measures to improve security and standards of living, but it does very little to bring down rents to an affordable level. Private renting is the least affordable form of housing. 1 in 5 tenants are spending more than half of their income on rent. This has knock on negative effects: household debt, the inability to save, high rents forcing displacement, adults unable to live in the areas they grew up due to unaffordable prices.

We need to tackle this issue. My union ACORN supports calls by the Renters Reform Coalition, of which it is a member, to cap rent increases and do more to bring rents down.

Please use your position to push for these changes to the bill by signing on to amendment NC7 by Carla Denyer - for rent control - and amendments 5, 6 and 9 by Paula Barker - for capping in tenancy rent rises - You can find the amendments here (https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3764/publications). Bringing down rents will not only improve quality of life and security for tenants, but this action will build trust in the ability of our system to support the needs of tenants - and it will have wider benefits for our communities and our economy if renters have more money in their pockets.

How we use the data you enter on this form
