Boot the Bailiffs!

Every year Nottingham City Council refers thousands of cases of unpaid council tax to bailiffs.

We are calling on Nottingham City Council to end the use of bailiffs in the collection of council tax debt.

In 2014, the ‘Taking Control of Goods’ act was passed which sets out national standards that all bailiffs should adhere to. However, these reforms have had limited success and households, many with young children, report widespread problems with the behaviour and actions of bailiffs.

As soon as bailiffs are employed, they start charging fees that are adding to peoples’ debt, causing further distress for struggling households.

In April 2018, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham stopped using bailiffs to collect unpaid council tax. Instead, they use their own ethical debt collection approach. In simple terms, this means never asking anyone to pay more than they can afford, treating people with courtesy and respect, and carrying out proper income and expenditure assessments to agree what can be paid and over what period. Hammersmith and Fulham Councils approach shows that a better future is possible.

The cost of living crisis is pushing millions of people across the country into debt. A visit from the bailifs can be one of the most stressful parts of being in debt. As this crisis grows, our councils should be helping us rather than sending round the bailiffs.

Will you stand with the people of Nottingham by signing this petition to call upon Nottingahm City Council to stop sending bailiffs to some of the most vulnerable households in the city

We call upon Nottingham City Council to boot out the bailiffs from Nottingham!

Boot the Bailifs from Nottingham City Council!

Every year Nottingham City Council refers tens of thousands of cases of unpaid council tax to bailiffs. The majority of these cases are related to debts of below £750.

The cost of living crisis is pushing millions of people across the country into debt. A visit from the bailifs can be one of the most stressful parts of being in debt. As this crisis grows, our councils should be helping us rather than sending round the bailiffs.

We want Nottingham City Council to end the use of bailifs for council tax debt
