We’re calling for an immediate eviction ban for all tenures, a stop to mortgage repossessions and a freeze on rising rents for private tenants in England for the duration of the crisis, as is happening in Scotland.

Dear Mr Gove,

As you will be aware, inflation has recently hit a 41-year high, with household finances squeezed for most across the country. The Office for National Statistics estimates that it is the poorest households that are being hit hardest and fastest by this cost of living crisis.

Rising rents and mortgage rates are adding to already stretched household finances, meaning the likelihood of accruing rent and mortgage debts and the subsequent possibility of eviction and homelessness are an all too real possibility for many this winter.

We heard from PM Rishi Sunak that fairness and compassion were at the heart of the Autumn Statement, but we need more than lip service to this growing crisis, we need action and we need it now.

That’s why we are calling on you to bring in the measures necessary to help those struggling and to take action to avoid a worsening of this crisis.

We ask you to follow Scotland’s lead and implement a moratorium on evictions for all tenures, a halt on mortgage repossessions and a freeze on rent rises for the duration of the cost of living crisis to help keep people in their homes this winter.
